South Korea bans Deepfake technology.
South Korea joins several countries in banning DeepSeek, a Chinese AI technology, over privacy and security concerns. The South Korean government has prohibited its use in defense and commercial computers, citing potential risks related to personal data collection. Other countries like Australia, Italy, and Taiwan have also restricted DeepSeek, raising alarms about privacy issues and the connection to Chinese telecom companies.
Seoul: The Chinese company DeepSeek, which has recently made waves in the AI sector, is rapidly advancing. However, it is also facing growing concerns and suspicions. While several countries have already banned its use, South Korea has now joined this list. Official sources have revealed that the use of DeepSeek in the country’s defense and commercial computers has been prohibited. Given the growing concerns from various countries about the use of DeepSeek, the decision was made to ban it. Authorities from the Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Commerce stated that intelligence agencies should use this technology carefully, as it is unclear how the system collects users' personal information.
Reports suggest that the country’s Ministry of Environment has also issued similar warnings. Researchers have pointed out that DeepSeek is connected to a Chinese government telecom company in the U.S. and that user login data is being transmitted to that telecom company via computer code. The Canadian-based security firm, Firoot, first identified this issue and shared it with the Associated Press news agency. Independent computer experts have confirmed these details. However, it remains unclear whether this data transfer actually took place. Neither DeepSeek nor China Mobile has responded to these allegations.
In light of these developments, countries like Australia, Italy, and Taiwan have already banned DeepSeek’s services. The Australian government has prohibited the use of DeepSeek on government computers and devices but has not banned personal devices. The Australian government has advised its citizens to be cautious while using DeepSeek. After DeepSeek failed to address privacy concerns, Italy's Data Protection Authority announced a ban on its chatbot. Similarly, Taiwan has issued orders to prohibit the use of DeepSeek in government agencies. For more updates, visit Vaartha.
